Merry Merry Round

EAST KOWLOON CULTURAL CENTRE PUBLIC ART COMMISSIONING PROJECT – OPEN CALL FOR PROPOSAL

Recalling the time when we were pursuiting our dreams in the good old days… Time goes by, every one and thing around us have changed. For all HongKongers, it is always tough to get a balance between dream and fun. As one evolves from a kid to a grown up, ‘fun’ seems to become a complex substance. We all wish that some kind of breakout could just be around the corner that could bring us some moment of freedom and childish joy. Merry-go-round used to be very common in many places such as Wong Tai Sin Resettlement Area, Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Choi Hung Estate and other places, and it runs through the memories of every one of us. While being an art installation to enjoy, a re-interpret version of a merry-goround is created, named Merry-Merry-Round.

The key idea of Merry-Merry-Round is simple - Connecting the old and new, and evoking our communities, local tradition and heritage. The installation makes use of a structural centre post with cables holding two circular rings in place. The lower one named “Round Ark” amplifies HongKongers’ traditional believe “on the same boat”, while the upper one is a mirrored “Scenic Ring”. The installation rotates and swings softly for one to engage, reflect on oneself, immerse and enjoy in dreams.
