CATHEDRAL HQ

Whilst at AHMM, Eric was part of the Design Team for the Cathedral HQ project.

Cathedral is a unique and vibrant headquarter building for the innovative property development Cathedral Group located in St Thomas’s Church, Southwark. The new headquarters and refurbishment has built upon the existing special qualities of the building. By creating a contemporary working environment and location for Cathedral’s own art collection, AHMM designed a place that would enable the company to attract and retain the very best staff and which was inspiring and convenient for everyone they work with.

Working on the Grade II* Listed church that had fallen into disrepair presented a number of challenges. The existing form and structure of the 1700’s church provided constraints to layouts, servicing, layouts and accessibility and the building shared services and entrances with The Old Operating Theatre Museum. Located within the roof space of the church, accessed only from the tower, this venue is one of London’s most interesting museums housing London’s first operating theatre opened in 1829 and associated herb garret where medicines were made for the adjoining St Thomas’s Hospital.

The approach to the scheme is to establish a clear contrast between old and new by accentuating the qualities of both. The new office accommodation is designed as a series of elements that can be dismantled and will allow the space to be brought back to its original form. These objects and insertions are free standing elements that can be choreographed.
