"BIKIDOUGH" - RIBA SHOPFRONT

Whilst at Arup Associates, Suzanne led the Design and the Project Team of Bikidough, another RIBA Windows Project in Xintiandi Shanghai in year 2015. Running in its third year, it was a Sino-British cultural exchange project in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the British Council, Shanghai XinTianDi Style and RIBA architecture firms. Once again this collaboration brought retail and design together in creative spaces for the public to experience art and architecture.

Arup Associates created a sustainable interactive lighting installation “Bikidough” that celebrates the art of pizza making. The project coincides with Marzano’s 50th anniversary celebration, hence the installation echoes Italian cultural references and in form emulates the art of pizza making, while also reflecting the healthy low-carbon lifestyle advocated by Arup Associates design philosophy

The installation consists of the red, white and green colours of the Italian flag presented through electroluminescent (EL) wire, which by way of its twisting geometry simultaneously represents the form of stretched pizza dough, reflects sunlight by day, and is illuminated by night. This interactive illumination is powered by two bicycles which pay tribute to another Italian passion, that of sports: the bicycles entice members of the public to interact with the installation as reward for healthy exercise, and further promotes a low carbon lifestyle.
