ARK ALL SAINTS ACADEMY & HIGHSHORE SCHOOL

London, UK

Whilst at AHMM, Eric was an integral member of the Design Team for the ARK Academy project.

The project is conceived and delivered as a single project of multiple parts that includes the ARK All Saints Academy, Highshore SEN School and the St Michael and All Angle Church. This project was one of the Building School for the Future (BSF) Phase 2 projects in Southwark, London. The former existing SMAAA school on site was required to be maintained in operation for the construction period. This constraint created two build areas that required only minimal initial demolition to enable the construction of the entire project. ARK All Saints Academy is a three storey building with a ‘courtyard’ typology, cater for 800 pupils (600 11-16 and 2 00 +16). The Sports Hall is conceived as a separate two storey pavilion located to the north east corner of the site with frontage for both students and community use. Highshore SEN School is to cater for 98 pupils (90 11-16 and 8 +16) with ‘complex learning needs to severe learning difficulties’ with a ‘central street’ typology. The proposed St. Michael and All Angels, All Souls and Emmanuel Parish Church is located at the eastern end marked by a bell tower.

While two schools are sharing the site, they have a requirement for distinct identities as they operate saperately. To address this issue while ensuring that there is a unifying architectural language across the site a kit-of-parts has been developed, the kit enables the articulation of specific elevational approaches which respond to massing and aspect using a shared pre-defined palette of complementary materials.
